G-WAG PROGRAMS
We are blessed with a team of dedicated members who work tirelessly to design and implement programs to facilitate our mission of promoting entrepreneurship, culture and giving back to the community. Our current programs include but are not limited to:
Business Directory: G-WAG is committed to helping to build a stronger community in Georgia. One of the key ways we hope to achieve this is through the creation of a business directory for our community. We invite all members, churches, associations and businesses to help us keep the directory updated by providing us with input. Free listings comprise of company name, contact information and type of service. Click here to submit an entry. Copies of the July 2009 directories are available at tropical grocery stores in Metro-Atlanta. Contact us if you would like to receive a copy.
Youth Exchange Program: Youth Exchange provides young Americans with the opportunity to live with a family in Ghana and to experience the culture. The program also sponsors Ghanaian children to travel to the US to live with a family for a period of up to 90 days. This often takes place when school is not in session and usually does not include an academic program.
Pen Pal or E-Pal: In keeping with its mission, G-WAG partners with schools in Georgia by establishing pen-pal links with Ghanaian students, collecting books, clothes, school supplies and first aid supplies, and by raising money to support our ongoing efforts. We especially encourage our youth to form friendships with children living in Ghana. Throughout the year they exchange postcards, emails and letters to learn about what’s happening in their lives and share these with us at monthly meetings.
Fashion Show: Children learn about the different kinds of clothing and what clothes are worn on special ocassions. They are taught the meaning of adinkra symbols and how some basic African print materials are made. They also gain hands-on experience in making some of these fabrics. All kids are encouraged to participate in the annual fashion show either in their personal African wear or others donated by Ghanaian designers.
Language: There is no better way to identify a people than through their language. We give the children the opportunity to learn some of the main Ghanaian languages namely:- Fante, Twi, Hausa, Ewe and Ga. Children are grouped by tribe to learn the language of their parents. If you would like to be involved in teaching our children and instilling a sense of pride in their heritage, we would be pleased to hear from you.
Folklore: Do your children know about the master trickster and cultural hero Kwaku Ananse? He is the symbol of wit, wisdom, creativity and represents almost all the complexities in life. In the past, these stories were originally passed down through oral tradition but they have now been beautifully written and illustrated by various authors. We use these short narratives to convey folk wisdom and to instill our values and beliefs in our kids. If you have a collection of Ananse stories yourself, we welcome you to share them with our children.
